When is a Door Not a Door is a poetic exploration of the different definitions of home. Whether looking at houses under construction, abandoned or inhabited, there will always be traces of humanity that can speak about what home is - both as an infrastructure and space. This work is a visual juxtaposition between multiple types of houses and the unnoticed signs of life around them. While some people see an abandoned house as a playground meant to be vandalized, others see it as a real estate product, a lucrative object that can be sold and easily rebuilt. However, others see houses as a place of shelter, comfort and protection. No matter the house and its condition, signs of life will always be present, along with narratives waiting to be told.
The door is presented as a metaphor, an entryway into the story of each house. Multiple doors and windows, whether broken, dirty, under construction, or in perfect shape, point out the different narratives and the human presence that exists or once existed there. Other objects such as locks, signs, and belongings are shown to highlight the narratives present in every space. The variety of colour tones, as well as abstraction in some of the photographs, reinforce the multiplicity of perspectives on what a home can be.
The work's provocative title invites us to question our different views and biases towards houses and the concept of home.
